“The critical shared characteristic is a potential basis for creating a community.”
Elisheva Sadan
The artworks displayed in this exhibition were created in the Space for Community Art. They represent the progress of members of a community formed by artists of the Incubator in unusual spaces: hotels for evacuees; a shelled and abandoned town; city squares; a studio in Kfar Yanoh; private archives and apartments. In the context of their work, the artists conducted dialogues with various groups of people, whose participation in the program provided the fundamental material for the artworks.
The work on the exhibition took place as the routine of war became the daily reality of Haifa and the Northern region. Between alarms and bombardments the artists found themselves navigating damaged and rundown spaces, still seeking new ways to introduce and be introduced, and to create and propose new paths for the imagination. Out of the friction with the facts of life in this complex period, there emerged an understanding that art is able to distill meaning, paint a horizon in an unstable reality, and offer a reason for getting up in the morning.
The exhibition deals with the space we call Israel, as a house frequently broken into, changed, and undermined. Relating to that, the works on display bring to the surface marginalized voices, and examine identities that are off the familiar pathways of society.
